Is there any guidance for when a team grows from two to three people?

I am a manager with one direct report with whom I have worked with for two years. We work together in an open office setting and there is a high degree of communication between us most of the workday. Often we attend the same meetings together. We make most decisions together. Though I am in charge, our relationship has been a professional marriage of sorts based on respect and trust.

The workload in our area is growing and this past week I hired a third employee who will start in three weeks. I understand that adding one direct to a team of two triples the relationships which makes me wonder what I need to do differently to be effective.

Will I be able to maintain the same relationship with my existing direct? How should I handle communication and decision making moving forward? What should I do to prep my existing direct for changes? Are there other things I should be thinking about?
