Forums

Hi,

I am new to Manager Tools so please excuse me if I am posting in a wrong forum. Please do let me know the correct forum or move the thread to appropriate one.

I am a senior technical guy - not a manager as in I don't have any direct reports - leading a project technical team. I have been recently promoted (thank you very much!) and been given a task to mentor a former peer. (We were in same grade before promotion.) I have heard all the podcasts related to coaching and they have been a lot of help.

My question - Is there a difference between coaching and mentoring? If yes, what is that? I have been applying the techniques of coaching model with my mentee. Am I right in doing so?

Further, my mentee is not, for lack of better word, serious about this and taking a lot of time to come up with a plan. There are no measurable tasks despite telling him repeatedly. How much time should I give him before taking a strong step? Any suggestions on how to motivate him? I have made it clear that it is his career and he has to own the effort. Is my recent promotion working against me in this case? How can I overcome this roadblock?

Thanks.

Coaching vs mentoring

My experience is coaching/mentoring is "blurry" when both ar appied internally in an organization. However, there is a significant difference when doing this for people who are external to one's organization.

Hope this helps
