not ready for negative feedback yet?

Hey all,

The cast on rolling out the tools advises to spend months providing only positive feedback.  I'm in the middle of that now with my directs.  Of course, there are plenty of things still coming up that could use adjusting feedback.  Do I just hold my tongue until it's time?

Thanks!

yes...stay with the plan.  Waiting a little while longer to do something that you've waited up until even now to know what to do won't hurt you at all.  Especially when your DR's will be more likely to hear you when the feedback is adjusting.

You MAY CONSIDER giving adjusting feedback now if a top performer has repeatedly asked for it.  You should have several responses prepared to rebuff the requests first.  A few examples would be:

  • Thank you
  • Thank you for that input
  • Thank you, I'll take that into consideration
  • I see a lot of positive activities in this environment
  • Thank you.  Can I give you some feedback?  When you encourage me to look critically at your behaviors, and ask me to give feedback on things you could do to improve, what I hear is that you truly are striving to become the best you can be, and that's exactly what I need

If you have a top performer that's positively begging for adjusting feedback, use the Starter Feedback Model to limit the shock.
Personally, the only exception I would ever make would be for a top performer who had worked for me in the past and was already accustomed to the M-T approach.
