I was having issues with a direct report pushing back on O3s initially. When I explained that it was a time to discuss and communicate in order to work together better in the future and that it wasnt optional. The first part of the O3s became more about personal life than about work or communicating issues. When it comes to my part of the O3s, I try to follow up or get work related issues identified or addressed but I'm met with a short reponse and little engagement. Does anyone have some advise or a podcast they can point me to?

Pushback is to be expected. If your direct is getting comfortable sitting down and talking about random stuff, but closes up when you talk business, I'd work with it. Make it a comfortable place for them, maybe introduce business issues in small doses at first. If you've opened up the lines of communication you're halfway there and it will improve overall communication. If business is a sensitive topic for some reason maybe just shooting the breeze could reveal the reason.
