 Hello everyone,

BLUF: What is the distinguishing variable between coaching and feedback?

I've been catching up on the pod casts and have a renewed appreciation for o3's. In addition to establishing rapport and strengthening "relationship power", it is the perfect platform to deliver coaching and feedback.

I understand coaching to include feedback. I've wrapped my head around:

1.Can I

2. When you

3. Will you (in the future)

4. Thanks

My challenge is distinguishing between coaching and feedback. Doesn't coaching include feedback about the observed behavior? Feedback is incomplete without discussing a plan and future behavior right?

Love the show! I am a Director in a non-profit organization. I just used the One-on One Tracking Form for a Phone One on One. Pretty cool tool!  Thanks guys!

 NBK,

Coaching and Feedback are two different things.

Feedback is the second part of the MT Trinity.  It is designed to provide clear reienforcement for positive behavior and small correction for ineffective behavior.

Positive and Corrective Feedback should be considered behavior based management on the job during current tasks and duties.

Coaching, on the other hand, is more about helping your Direct grow in and out of his/her position.  New skills, new tasks, new personal and career opportunities.

Examples are : read a book, go to a class, run a meeting, take on more responsibility.

Does this help ?

 That sure did help!

Feedback is about behavior.

Coaching is about growth.

Thanks Todd for taking the time to reply.

 NBK,

You are welcome. YES I think you got it.

And my High C personality can't leave you with out a small nuance addition.

* You can listen to this week's Podcast about Coaching - Interrupting .

Mark and Mike make a different kind of distinction between them.

Both are about behavior.

FeedBack is much more short term and brief corrections.

It may or may not be a vehicle for growth.  Sometimes it is only a way to improve a Direct's day to day performance on the job. - And that's it.

I personally, see Feedback as more about the "surface" - surface changes in behavior - putting touch-up paint and sanding down rough spots.

Maybe - lots and lots of Feedback over time might become growth - but that is not the purpose (per se)

Coaching : Yes, I think you got it ...  it is about growth.

Coaching is more about the inside changing.

Feedback should always be given in person - never by email or IM. But we often give "feedback" in writing if we are correcting a working paper or a deliverable and might write things such as "this might look better if you structured it this way". Perhaps the latter isn't "feedback" which I agree is all about "behavior". Perhaps the latter is really "coaching"?

Hence we can still keep to the "feedback in person only" rule, while giving written coaching?

Is this a valid explanation of the difference between feedback and coaching?
