Help needed identifying achievements

Hi all,

I would welcome some help identifying achievement as I am struggling with it. (Any additional advice on my situation is also welcome).

Current situation: Since last June, I am employed in a small company for which I relocated (Scotland to France), changed industry and took a small pay cut. The company management has told me that they don't have work for me anymore and French laws being what they are they don't want to go through a layoff procedure and would much prefer that I search for a new position and quit when I have one (no maximum duration provided yet). I am now spending my days in the office searching for a job (since yesterday). My CV is mostly up-to-date but I am struggling to identify achievements.

How I got there: I was hired as a team manager to lead and manage a team of 5 to 8 software developers. Starting at the company right after my relocation I found that there was no team for me to lead! After a month of having very little to do, except for internal networking and reading on products, I got assigned for a 3-month "partner mission" as a 2nd level sub-contractor on the client site, with no team. I started this task in July, and in August I finally managed to convince my management to bring reinforcement. Two 3rd level sub-contractors working part-time for the next month were introduced to me to help deliver a data migration product. I ended up doing most of the work myself to the best of my abilities but limited by my knowledge of the specific technologies. On mid-September, the project moved on, the 1st level contractor having decided to change sub-contractor. My employer has since tried to contract me out as a Technical Project Management consultant but with no success. The team I was initially supposed to lead got formed but in the meantime my company acquired a smaller company and they got a more experienced manager to do the job. Since September, I don't either report to anybody in particular.

Waiting for an assignment from month to month, I voluntarily took up tasks such as putting together a "management standards review" with actionable suggestions and changes to improve operations; I also did quite a bit of coaching of engineers from other groups who had been given project management tasks with no support or training. All along, I have tried to get measures of my actions but in all cases the company’s management didn't have time to look into what I proposed to them...

Any advice on what I should do now? What should I explore next?

I am now looking for other management positions but the industry here in Toulouse, France seems to be polarized towards technology-specific technical leadership or sales/business development management, with extremely flat and "self-managed" team members.

Thanks a lot for the help,

François

During the time you were on-site on the client certainly you must have achieved something of note.  It doesn't have to be revolutionary, but even just being the only man on the job for several months is an accomplishment.
Additionally - focus on the coaching of others.  If you want to be in management, that's important.  Did you coach someone through a big project?  Can you use #s from that project?
Since you've been in the job less than 1 year you probably don't need too many bullets.  I wouldn't expect you to have had astonishing accomplishments in such a short time.

Good luck finding something new!!

Thanks for the lead, it got me going. I indeed identified a 80 man-day  task that had been omitted in a quotation during one of my coaching session.
Hopefully I can get something soon. Not for financial reasons but mostly to get out of the hostile environment!

Any additional info on the Toulouse market is welcome! ;-)
