One on ones in the construction trades

My husband own a solar installation business. We have office employees and installers. I have been doing one on ones with the office staff for months and it has been working well. My question is about doing one on ones with the installers. My husband finds it challenging and uncomfortable because it if a foreign activity in the construction field and it is difficult to schedule with the work load. What is your experience with one on ones in the construction industry. Who is the right person to be carrying out the one on ones? Can they be done in a different setting, say at a ball game or over a drink? And a big thank you for your brilliant work!!!

 Hi Maggie,

Being in the construction industry myself, I think there are plenty of opportunities for one on ones even though you may not be sitting in front of a desk or at an office.  As a construction pro, I'm sure that you have some types of group meetings with the crew that you could conduct a one on one with the foreman or crew member after the meeting.  One example would be holding the person after morning tool box meeting where you are lining out the work with the crew.  Another option would be conducting it after a safety meeting with the larger crew.  I would advise against conducting it during a ball game or over a drink since you really want to make sure that it is a professional meeting.  I have always found that the the truck is a great office in the field.  Try to make the best use of the time that you are in the field instead of scheduling something in addition.

Hope this helps,

Shawn

I have thought about using one on ones in my small construction and engineering business.  It will work fine with the office employees.
Do you recommend trying them with hourly electricians or similar construction workers?  I do not know if they will appreciate it or hate it.
