Managing in the Military vs. Civilian world

Wondering what the opinions are out there about the difference in techniques or approach which work best when managing in the military.  Are they any different then in the Civilian world?  I am in the CG and constantly run into the comment from subordinates saying "this is a military organization."  Meaning that we need to manage differently, but i am not really convinced as to why or how.

I spent 8 years in the Navy, and looking back, the military would be better off if all of the leaders managed this way.  The US Navy has leadership training for anyone beyond a certain paygrade (I believe it's E-4, if that means anything to you), but it doesn't have much in the realm of actionable items. 
I would be interested to see if Mark & Mike could get onto a ship or into a command somewhere and inject this information into the military.  I'm sure it would bolster morale (which is also contagious)

This is an interesting question.  I have no military background so I don't know how a military 'manager' would affect a direct's addiction to food, clothing, and shelter.
Of course, human behavior hasn't changed much in the past 20,000 years so, much of what's promoted at M-T should still apply.  I'm most interested in hearing if there's a change to the adjusting feedback model for military directs.
