I started at a 4 yr school right after hs. I realized quickly that I wasn't ready for college. Instead of settling I immed went to work selling copiers and my sales career began from there. Fast forward 20 yrs and I am up for a promotion to VP of Sales for the small company that I have been with for the past 18 mos. If it comes up what is the best way to explain why I never finished college (or did I just do it here?)

thanks!

I recommend you simply tell the truth, and explain what you have learned and experiences. Try to stay focused on issues that prove you are right for the job. The worst you can do is lie about it.

I think the explanation you gave would satisfy me! In truth, how relevant would it be for your potential new role if you HAD been to college 20 years ago? My guess is, not at all - you probably would not be relying on the skills you picked up way back then to make you suitable for the new role, you'll be using the skills that you can demonstrate you have picked up in your professional career. Bet they can't actually think of any way that having a degree from 20 years ago would make you a better VP...

You might want to make sure you can sound (and can be) relaxed about this point - as VP you may have a lot of Directs that have more academic qualifications than you do. No need for that to be a problem, unless you would not be able to cope with managing a bunch of college graduates. That WOULD be a legitimate concern for the interviewers. So maybe the interviewers will ask about college to see if you go all defensive or anti-intellectual.

Hope that helps & good luck!

I am guessing that if they cared about your lack of college, you would not be up for the role.  Have a nice answer anyhow, as they might use this point as an ice breaker or a talking point.
