Our company is currently going through layoffs. As part of the layoffs, we've recently reduced the number of VPs and SVPs in the company. Sometime early next year, we will be reducing Director level and below.

My preference was to hear about my layoff from my current manager. Because she was laid off first, I didn't have that privilege.

Because this is the first time I've had to go through layoffs, I'm wondering why the layoffs from the top down and the bottom up. No doubt there are excellent reasons.

Thanks for the help,

DougP

I don't think this is a general property of layoff waves. In fact, in many cases only the people at the bottom are laid off, and the slimmer company continues with the same group of top managers.

In any case, turning it around also gives weird effects: imagine having to lay off all your people, only to be laid off yourself just after.... I have the feeling you somehow can see this coming....

Good luck looking for new employment!

There are different patterns for layoffs. Yours is just one.

Good luck!
