bluf, I have a direct with whom I have held off on giving feedback for a positive behavior with the fear it may offset his corrective feedback.
His behavior when digging in to correct a supplier non conformance is exceptional if not corrected we take the hit $$$.
He covers all his bases this usual ends successfully as follows:
Our Client incurs no cost caused by error
Supplier provides Corrective Action Reports
We are not tagged for costs associated with error
In our industry it is rare to get directs who will follow up in such detail to gain these successes.
As for behaviours requiring correction this direct is weak in aggressive pursuance and follow up on sales opportunities.
I would like feedback on how I can best address this in one feedback interaction, if one session is advisable.
My concern is reinforcing negative behavior by providing positive feedback.
Thanks all.

BLUF - There is no reason I can think of to hold off on giving positive feedback. The logic of your approach is that your direct will use praise for one behavior as an excuse to not correct another behavior?
You're overthinking this. Use the model; make sure you've CLEARLY thought through what you're going to say about behaviors. And make sure you ask: "What are you going to do different next time?" when you're giving the corrective feedback. The quality of your direct's answer will indicate if your message is getting through.
And even though this probably goes without saying: don't give both positive and corrective feedback at the same time - because you'll undercut the desired outcome of both of them!

Mixing Positive with Corrective
You are withholding positive feedback for fear that it will undercut the negative feedback that you have given to the direct. What your direct hears is that you never recognize what they do right, only what they do wrong.
You need to give feedback...of all kinds....all the time with a real slant towards the positive feedback. If all you give is negative, they will avoid you and won't want to work with you. Find your reports doing something right and give them positive feedback for it. Your negative stuff will be just that much more valuable because of the contrast.

I obviously was over thinking this and not taking each issue at its behavioral level.
I will use the very next opportunity to provide corrective feedback for the behavior, from now till then I will be sure recognize all the good.
Thank you both for walking me through my frustration.
