I have been using O3 for some months now. When re-reading my notes, I realised that I sometimes missed one important point : systematically review the main goals of the direct (his "MT" goals !). I think the O3 is the perfect place for that. I now will have a post-it for each direct. I will always stick it on my paper before each O3. It will allow me to quicky review the goals of the direct and it will be like a reminder to put us back on track during the conversation. Another bad tendency I have during O3 is trying to put too much "material" (feedback, information, questions, etc) into them and not succeeding in addressing each topic correctly. I need to just keep 3 important messages, ... Good enough for half an hour. Ced.

Great idea Cedric. When I read it I immediately thought of the 3-ring binders I use to store the O3 notes. They have a plastic cover that I can insert a paper into. I though, "why not slide the goals sheet in right there?" Even better, slide in their last annual review. If you're using M&M's 1-page format you'll have their needed improvements and goals at your fingertips every time you have an O3!

I just found an innovation for myself. Thanks Ced!

I place a copy of my directs goals as the first few pages in the binder for easy access as well, but my hack involves punching the sheets on the right side (as opposed to the left) and using an index tab to identify the (top) goals sheet.

When I open the binder to this page, I have the goals on the left side, and their most recent O3 on the right.

Hi Dale,

I do this as well... with a twist - I put their goal sheet as a mind map in a plastic sleeve so that I can reference it through the 1-1. If I need to adjust goals, then I modify it with them on the spot get their agreement, PDF it and and send it to them that day.

I also have a separate folder for each direct - they seem to prefer that as it make them believe they have a dedicated folder.

... just my methods...

A good idea and if you have the time to periodically review goals in O3's then do it, I use this monthly to see if goals are on target or need to changed.

The key is a flexible system that easily allows you to add content to the O3 structure. Maybe another use for something like I use, which isn't a binder, you can see the idea at http://www.manager-tools.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=2598

Using a soft version that is easily modified would allow you to add in goals review. The tool I choose to use also allows you to link maps together, I have taken to working through my goals and my reports goals in a mind map format so I can easily link the O3 map and the goals map together for tracking purposes.

Thanks for sharing David.

Just to be sure : is it hand written notes or is it directly entered in your computer?

Thanks.

I enter it directly into the PC. You can easily export the output to Word as well

I would not directly enter info in my PC during O3s. It would distract me from just listening. I have a hard time trying to structure what I hear and listen to it at the same time !
