I'm new to MT and just discovered this great resource two weeks ago. I've already listened to about 10 podcasts and am working my way through all of them.
For those of you who have been to past conferences or have been engaged with MT for longer, I’m wondering if I need to spend some time trying the great ideas in the casts before attending a conference? Is the assumption for conference attendees that you are already well versed in all that is MT??

Tom-

First time attendees do great - we've had plenty that have never listened to a cast.

Unfortunately, we keep our conferences small to allow individual attention, and Chicago just filled up this morning. We will be in New York in May.

Hello Tom.

Go to New York.

Listen to what you can before then.

I went to the DC conference after having listened for quite a while and still learned a ton. I've sent managers from my company that had never listened to any 'casts and they learned as well.

No perquisite except an open mind. And even if you don't have an open mind, they'll let you go... your mind will open once you're there.

I'm glad I got signed up when I did, then. We still don't have the 2008 training budget approved, so I registered on my own dime, and I'll expense it later when I have approval. See everyone in March!

I paid for it on my own dime, for San Antonio, while I was a "manager without portfolio", having left a multi-national and spending my time kicking around the professional services "group" of a small company. I never had the option to expense it.

I'm now a Director, reporting to our President, and part of the management team, at the top systems integrator company in the Tampa Bay area.

Coincidence? Meh. Your call.

:)

Yeah, it's worth it.

My company doesn't have a training budget for "Management Trainees", and probably with good reason. We are all: 23-24 years old, right out of college, and already a large investment in terms of time, energy and money.

That being said, I asked my parents for the conference for Christmas. This probably isn't a viable option to anyone over 24, but it seemed to have worked out in my case.

Hopefully, I can speak first hand to the conference's effectiveness for those of us still wet behind the ears. I look forward to meeting everyone there!

Also don't look for Quentin at the conference, he's my alias.

Just look for the 23 year old, and that's me :)

By all means, you should go!

At the inaugural conference last year, I met two guys who had never even heard of MT, let alone had they listened to any casts (their boss sent them). They found it quite worthwhile.
