I am an avid listener of the Manager Tools podcast and recently started an expatriate position with my company in The Hague so the Amsterdam conference looks like a great opportunity.

I have one question though...is it really the right type of training for me? I am a young (27) in-house intellectual property lawyer (American) with no direct reports; however, I do have management (either in-house or in a law firm) as a career aspiration. I benefit a lot from the communication advice on Manager Tools and find it useful in managing the patent portfolio I am responsible for and the clients I deal with who are themselves managers.

My question is: Is this conference appropriate for me? How should I sell it to my management as a positive training opportunity for me considering we have an in-house manager training course?

I may end up going to the conference even if it is not formally approved by my employer as a self development opportunity. I am just trying to figure out if it is the right thing for me.

Hello rachaelshl,

the conference MAY not be right.

My 2 cts:

I am also listenig to ALL episodes. There where a lot from which i thought they were not useful in my current situation.

And then two things happen:

1) The deeper knowledge of management, the small advices and insights in everyday managerial life which i hear in the conversations of M&M have a value of its own

2) Some episodes will be of use later:
For me it was the podcast
"Managing Through a Personal Crisis (Part 2 of 2) " from which i hoped not no use it at all.
Two month later a father of one of my directs died. I used the rules from the podcast - it helped a lot.

And now forget what i have typed:
I am _absolutely_ sure that it would be galactycally stupid to MISS such a opportunity to be trained by experts at that level.

I looking forward to meeting you in amsterdam!

I just registered. I learn a lot from the podcasts and think the conference will be a good development opportunity even if I am technically not a manager at the moment. See you there!

Rachael-

We're glad you'll be joining us.

I assure you the conference is for you.

If it's not what you think it should be, we'll give you all your money back, I assure you.

And, bring ALL your questions. No matter how many, we will answer ALL of them about ANYTHING career or managerial.

Thanks very much. I am definitely looking forward to attending.

One quick thing I have to share after listening to the preconference podcasts is that the correct pronunciation of the airport of the airport where the conference is located is "skip-poll." I remember watching my Dutch colleagues cringe when I said "ski-pole" the first few times. :)

The conference is definitely for you. If only... IF ONLY!!!! I could go back in time before I ever became a manager and learned all of these things. I'd be a millionaire today with thousands of employees.

The biggest trick to being a great employee is to understand what your manager is going through. If you can see with their eyes, you become an unstoppable top performer. This is the way to learn it.

Don't miss the opportunity. See them in person.
