Is there a cast that discusses this? Or does anyone have advice? What are the best ways to write goals for things like communications, interpersonal skills, and so forth? I'm finding a very, very hard time finding measurements. The only one I can think of thus far is "peer/internal client feedback."

I have had success with one of my directs setting goals like "In the next 90 days, my boss won't ask me what you're talking about in your email", where "my boss" is _my_ boss, my direct's manager-once-removed.

We've also had some success (although not as much) with him reporting weekly counts of email he sent after drafting, and counts of email he drafted, edited, then sent.  The goal was for him to remember to draft, then edit at least 3/4 of his email, hoping to get better clarity from his writing.

Hi

I have found success by asking my team members to demonstrate their new or improved soft skill capabilities.  Firstly, we would work together to determine a source or sources for their learning, and then we'd put together a goal that not only aquired the learning but demonstrated an ability to use it.

A typical goal might look like this.

  • Target date Dec 31st 2013.
  • Participate in and pass the Presentations Skills course at xxxx institute.
  • Identify 4 elements from your training that you will incorporate into your presentations
  • Practice your presentations with those 4 elements of improvement
  • Demonstrate in actual presentations how you have utilised these 4 new elements to improve your presentations

This would be the expectation that would get a 3 out of 5

To acheive an exceeding or excelling rating, incorporate more elements from your training into your presentations, or find additional sources from which you can obtain additional elements and demonstrate an improved proficiency in those elements also.  Positive feedback received from your audience will also be recognised.

Kind regards

Kevin

I set a goal for one of my directs to report each week during our O3 a specific example of a positive communication experience they had during the previous week.  This is a continuing follow-up to coaching and a seminar on tactful communications when their results started slipping and it looked like it was due mainly to poor communication & relationships.

Having them describe a positive outcome every week helps them stay mindful of the need to keep the communication positive (so they have something to report).  I only started this about 2 months ago, and was surprised this week when they volunteered the report rather than waiting for me to ask about it.  I hope that's a good sign that they're seeing the value in being more positive.
