Forum:

Soon I will be kicking off my first project in a new role as a product manager without reports (internal promotion). I am wondering about what order I should do things. I've listened to the SPOT kick-off meeting cast, the RACI cast, the Now and Later Tasks cast, and the a few of the other project management casts.

It's not an overly complicated project, but I'm getting a lot of pressure to get it kicked off and done quickly. Here's what I'm thinking:

  • Write up an initial task list in RACI format
  • Review initial task list with more experienced product manager
  • Host kick-off SPOT meeting, with team brainstorming additional tasks to be completed and potential issues
  • Assign 'now' tasks with dead-lines
  • Keep working with team members until all task are done and the project is completed

Does that make sense? Should I change the order? Add more steps somewhere?

Thanks for your advice!

The sequence you have mentioned is right and will be effective I would like ti add following steps:

1) Introduction:

Best opportunity for a project manager to energize his team.

2) Project Presentation:

Presenting  your reasoning behind the plan and conveying  the message.

3) Laying down the expectations of the team members.

Teamwork is one of the most important expectations to be set.

4) Timely reporting:

    Weekly status.

    Project updates.

    Resource utilization updates.

5)  Task Completion.
