Return to Previous Employer for Third Time?

Hey all. Looking for some perspectives.

My question is, does it make sense to go back to a company you've resigned from for a THIRD time?

In 2012 I joined a company as a project manager. Great opportunity for me. Learned a ton. Loved the job. After 3.5 years, my wife and I had a kid and we moved away to be closer to family.

In 2019, the same company asked me to return. I became the director of several departments (my previous boss became my direct report). Again, learned a lot. Enjoyed myself. I was being groomed to be the GM of the facility by my boss. Long story short, he got reassigned at the last minute and his boss didn't like the idea of my promotion (they didn't get along), I didn't get the GM role and I left in 2022 because of it. Feeling like I had hit the ceiling when I had more to offer. I regret that somewhat. Probably an overreaction. but I've learned from the experience.

Since leaving, I've worked for about a year at one company (startup, laid off after they failed) and about another year at another manufacturing company. Both jobs have been well paid, challenging, promotions, etc. I am forced to leave my current employer due to some legal/unethical situation I won't go into. I will just say the PE investors of my company has made some decisions and I unfortunately must resign or risk legal/ethical issues when their decisions are discovered. I hate it, but I have no choice.

Now the original company wants me to return as the VP of Operations. It's my ideal title, plenty of money, the boss is a close friend of mine I can trust, we have mutual respect and most importantly he is someone I know I can work for.

But I can't seem to shake this idea of going back a third time. I'm concerned about how it will look to the employees of that company, to future/prospective employers (I'm in my early 40s...lots of years ahead of me). Maybe I'm worrying too much about what others will think.

I'd appreciate your thoughts and perspective. Thanks in advance.

Having multiple stints like this isn't unusual for good contractors and consultants -- unusual for employees, but not troubling given the excellent narrative you have of this.  Each departure has good explanation;  with each return, you bring fresh relevant external exposures and deeper understandings into progressively weightier positions.
You'll have plenty of credible experience to draw on for growing those you mentor and coach.  Go out and inspire!
