In October '06 I ran into a co-worker who works in a different state. While sitting in an airport together waiting for our flights, I told him about 03's and how effective they were. I saw him in July at another meeting and he came over and thanked me for the suggestion. He had implemented them and was extremely pleased with the results. So, I'll pass on his thanks to Mark and Mike and encourage anyone who has yet to try them to do so.

Regards,

Glenn

Glen; What a great story! Thanks for sharing.

I heard a woman being interviewed on a podcast once (I only wish I remembered who it was and which podcast...). She was talking about casual mentoring. She said she finds people who she'd like to be mentored by, doesn't actually ask them to be her mentor but does ask for ideas, opinions and advice ("Hey you're pretty good at xyz, can I ask for some advice?").

Then, when she's taken that on board, used it in what ever way, she makes sure she gets back to that person and lets them know how their advice helped and exactly what she did with it. ("Hey remember you told me abc about xyz? Here's what I did ..., this is what I achieved ... - Thanks for the input!")

Her comment was that this made the person much more likely to be happy to help her again at a later time - simply by knowing how the advice was used and that it made a difference.

Your story kind of reminded me of this approach - I wonder will you be more passionate about helping that individual, or providing the same suggestion to others as a result of the feedback you received?

Thanks for the kind words, Peter.

I seldom miss an opportunity to evangelize about Manager-Tools. I've just recently gotten another co-worker to start listening. It's always encouraging when someone takes your advice and is better for it.

Well, gotta go catch up on those podcasts :D

I'll add my story to the melting pot - my best friend works in a completely different industry than mine and she is in an individual contributor role. In the last year or two, she had the wonderful opportunity to participate in training and implementation of process improvement across the company. Somewhere in there (okay, a LOT of places in there), we discussed Manager Tools and different casts I thought would help her at different times.

My friend's father passed away last Thursday morning, and I drove down first thing Friday to be there for her and her family. I knew she had been listening as we've discussed a number of podcasts over the last year or so. But in the course of the weekend, I heard a few things that made me smile:

-I want to give him some feedback, but I'm not sure how he'll take it. Do you think he's a S or a C? (a cousin singing karaoke)
-He just doesn't have a sense of urgency! (her husband, her son, and countless co-workers)

Every time 'sense of urgency' came out of her mouth we both had to sit back and giggle at the pervasive thought restructuring that MT can be. It was one of the many things that made the weekend easier for both of us than it could have been.

Beautiful stories. Kind of like random acts of kindness. Spread the word and it will have an effect :D
