This year I started managing a Direct Report who is located in another state. I'm preparing for the mid-year review with this Direct Report based on the Management Tools format, (which I have used for years). I'd prefer to conduct the Performance Review live but travel restrictions are preventing me from traveling. I'm looking for any insight on how to conduct a "virtual" Performance Review to make it impactful without being face to face with my Direct Report. Thank you.

Hi Kallen_4,

My experience is that LDPRs are no different to face to face ones.  So long as I have been frequent with my communication and feedback throughout the year, there are never any surprises in the PR.  I tend to share the PR with my directs in advance of the meeting to give them an opportunity to review and absorb and perhaps prepare a response prior to the meeting.  My PRs are generally less than 50% talking about the past and more than 50% talking about the future.

Having some kind of remote desktop sharing so that you can both be looking at the same part of the same document at the same time does help.  Also, be willing to listen and make some adjustments to wording if indeed, it it warranted.

Hope that helps

Kevin
