My name is James Butler; we emigrated from the UK in 1995 looking for a better lifestyle and have found it “down under” here in New Zealand. I’m married to a gorgeous Welsh lass and have 2.0 dogs (Josh & Milo)

I’ve been working in the I.T. sphere for a major New Zealand Bank for the past 6 years and in that time have moved up from an Analyst Programmer to Project Manager, and aiming at being PMI qualified within the next 3 years (currently studying for CAPM).

My main aim is to glean knowledge of AGILE / PRINCE / PMI methodologies over the next 5 years so that I can use the most appropriate toolsets over future projects to reach successful outcomes. I aim to become a portfolio manager in due course and be a mentor to other up and coming PM's.

Project Management is 9/10ths communication, and as such a network like this is a prime tool to push the bounds when it comes to increasing my own personal efficiency. Reading the posts here I feel that I’ve grounded myself quite nicely in a collection of like minded individuals that want to take management to the next level. This will, in turn enable me to bring my designated projects to great conclusions.

Since being “broadband enabled, a couple of months ago, I’ve subscribed to a number of podcasts, all of which must be applauded for the knowledge that they impart to others.

Best ones I’m listening to at the moment, in ranked order are;
1. "Manager Tools - Members-Only"
2. "Controlling Chaos"
3. "Motivation to Move"
4. "David Maister's Business Masterclass"
5. "The Project Management Podcast"
6. "Lean Agile Straight Talk podcast"
7. "Shaw Project Management"
8. "The PMO Podcast™"
9. "My Thought Coach"

Mike & Mark…. Your podcasts knocks socks off the others, keep up the great work, I’m spreading the word in my network of people down here in Auckland and have got a number of PM’s & Management types within the Bank hooked.

The single feed certainly makes life easier

Welcome to the M-T forum James. I could tell you were in IT before you mentioned it (the fact that you have 2.0 dogs gave it away) :D.

You certainly didn't waste any time finding the best of the best podcasts out there. I've not heard of all of them but have listened to Controlling Chaos. I am not a project manager but work very closely with a strong group of marketing and IT PM's and I've found that listening to that 'cast has helped me understand a little more of their process.

Again, welcome to the forum!

Dave...

an IT background sticks eh! that why I found looking after IT projects a great boon, when it comes to stepping up the ladder. I am able to think like the techies I'm managing.

This forum houses a wealth of fantastic information  and I'm steadily gleaning and putting into practice the ideas, with a subtle variance for the Kiwi way of operations.

Thanks for welcoming me into the fold

James-

Sorry this took so long.

Welcome aboard! My time in New Zealand was one of my favorite of my life. Nicer people cannot be found. I had such a time there that when everyone said all they wanted to do was come to America, I knew it must be about the economics, because the people and the country and the life was so good as to be addictive.

Glad you're with us, and glad you;re getting value. It's a privilege to serve you.

Mark

Since 2007 I have moved into the Service Management Function and been promoted to Service Operations Manager at Wright Express NZ.

I'm utilising all the MT techniques, along with Paul Allen (GTD) / Stephen Covey principles and hey presto 4yrs later am managing a team of 10 and supporting the Operations on behalf of our clients in NZ & Australia.  Thanks Guys for sharing your knowledge and making us richer in thought in the process.

ps.   My previous login credentials were lost, thats why my new profile has been formed...

Hi James,

no surprise there really -- but great to hear these techniques are actually working over extended period of time. They certainly do so for me.

Greetings to NZ, where I spent two months during a sabbatical back in 2006 with my wife. Seeing Christchurch in the rubble last week really broke my heart.

Good luck for you
