Interviewing for own job after merger

My wife is working at a school (senior finance officer) that is undergoing a long-planned merger.  She's been there ~2 years having previously been basic admin staffer at another school.  At the time she moved she was told emphatically that there would be no job losses.  Management has gone back on that promise.  So my wife will be interviewing for her own current position against a far more experienced SFO from the other school.  She's expected to provide a cover letter and resume.  The cover letter is probably going to be slightly different than the usual and I'm wondering if there's any advice..

I haven't been through this type of process and I can imagine that the interviewing questions might be slighly different as well.  Any thoughts on how that might work would be appreciated.
