Is it still a good idea to followup by phone and email with the hiring manager if I've already received an invitation for a second interview?
After a phone interview, I received an invitation for a face to face interview. The interview was with a hiring manager, and I've sent a thank you note already. The HR recruiter has followed up and scheduled the face to face.
On one hand, I'd like to keep my enthusiasm for the position fresh in his mind. On the other hand, I've already got the interview scheduled, so I don't want to appear obsessive?

Who did the phone interview? HR or the hiring manager?
If it was the hiring manager, you already thanked him or her, so what are you thanking them for this time?
If it was HR, and you thanked the HR person already, you have nothing (in my opinion) to thank the hiring manager for yet.
Finally, if you were significantly high energy and enthusiastic, that message is going to get passed from the HR person to the hiring manager. More than ever, so many people are so beat up right now, interviews are harder to come by and people just are not interviewing well. Make yourself stick out for the right reasons, not because you are over trying. Good luck in round two. Remember to smile. A lot. :)
I'm not clear on this, but I don't think you need to follow-up
I'm not sure I understand the situation, but let me try to summarize:
You had a first face-to-face interview, and sent a thank-you note. You were planning on following up via phone and email as well, but before you got to that you received an invitation for a second interview?
If that's the case, I don't think it's necessary to follow-up with more than the note you already sent, as the point of that would be to keep you in mind to get a second interview (which you already have). It wouldn't necessarily be awkward though. You could always say something like "Thanks for the opportunity, and I look forward to continuing the discussion in our follow-up interview."
Interview follow up - Confirm the Appointment
You might consider calling a day or two before the interview to confirm the appointment as long as there is at least a week between when you last talked to the recruiter and the interview. This gives you another opportunity to express how excited you are about the opportunity and make sure you didn't write the time or date down wrong. I like to confirm my appointments regardless, but with something as important as an interview I would certainly confirm.

I would just blow them off -- you pretty much already have the job!!!
As Mark and Mike would say, "If you don't have an offer, you don't have anything." I don't think you would be losing anything by thanking the HR Recruiter for taking the time to meet with you, and also for handling the face to face follow up so quickly.

I have had two phone interviews. The first with the HR person, to whom I sent a thank you note. The second was with the hiring manager, to whom I sent a thank you note.
This third interview, which has already been scheduled, is with the hiring manager.
I think it would be OK to call the hiring manager ( probably will get his vmail since he's out this week) and let him know that the HR person scheduled the interview and that I'm looking forward to meeting him in person.
Does that sound desperate ? :-)
I don't think there is a right or wrong answer
I don't think it sounds desperate but here is something to consider.
Put yourself in the manager's shoes. You have been out this week (not sure if vacation or just biz travel). Probably returning to a ton of emails, voice mails and just catching up on stuff. Do you want to leave a non-value adding Vmail telling him something his HR person will obviously put on his sched, especially since he is the one who put you to the next level?
One Hiring Manager's Perspective
I am currently interviewing to fill 2 positions. As a very busy manager with little time in my office to listen to voice mails or take phone calls, I would find phone calls / voice mails a bit of a distraction. I think email follow up is good for a phone screen, TY Note or TY Note & email for in person interview.
Of course, this is just my opinion and I have not done a lot of hiring so I can't speak for what is "normal".
