Here is the situation. I put in an application for an internal job. I got an interview with a three person panel on two hours notice and thought is went decent, but not great. This was 2 weeks ago. I followed up last week with an e-mail to hiring manager asking if he needed more info and what the time line for a decision was. He sent out an e-mail to candidates stating that they were still in the process of interviewing and had not picked anyone yet.

Now I am new to the job hunting world and had never heard of following up an interview with a thank you letter before today. I think it sounds like a good idea and I will be doing it from now on, but I am wondering if I am too late.

Would sending it now to each person who interviewed me be a positive or negative thing, when it will be two weeks late?

Very simple rule for thank you notes: it's never too late.   And no decision has been made, so do it now!

It's hard to imagine someone getting a thank you note and thinking anything negative about it.

Here is the format

line 1.  Say thank you.  Thank you for making time to interview me today.

line 2.  Say something special/personal - I really appreciated what Bill said about the position's role as it applies to supporting the Business Unit (or some such drivel

Line 3.  Another thank you type statement.  With much appreciation.... your name here

DO NOT ASK FOR ANYTHING IN THE THANK YOU NOTE.  NO DECISION TIMES, NO FAVOURS, NOTHING.  JUST SAY THANK YOU.

And these don't have to be $7 cards.  Dollar store cards are fine, just make sure the envelopes stick.
