Hello,
I just recently heard (via a back channel) that my roie and my entire team will be made redundant. Of course this is distressing to learn, but some bullets you cannot dodge.
Can anyone give me some advice, about how to handle that meeting, how to be awesome to my team, and how to exit with dignity and honour?
Regards
M

Sort of just through that
First step, wait until you get confirmation. No sense in getting worked up until the news is real and not third hand. Then continue to work professionally and do the job you are paid to do. For your team, support by assisting with job searches, resume help, networking, etc. And, of course, use Career Tools for the new job search.
Good luck!!

Done deal
Thank you for your comments, Dawne.
It's pretty much a done deal, the source is highly credible, and it's a testament to the trust we have that they shared.
I spend a lot of late evenings and early mornings on calls, and now my motivation has naturally dropped significantly. So I'm not quite clear on whether being professional includes continuing to go beyond the call of duty.
In the meeting itself, I guess there will be a conversation about 'business decision' and such. If I'm offered an incentive to help with a transition, is it disrespectful to my team to accept? I feel like it is, but I'm probably not being objective (feeling sentimental, and somewhat betrayed).
I have been fighting the change for a couple of months with data and rationale, this definitely feels like defeat.
High quality to the end would be the advice I would give, so I guess that what I should do too.
Ouch! It's got to hurt
During times like these I do my best to remember that the stages of emotion are Denial, Anger, Fear, Bargaining and Acceptance. People will be "stuck" in different places and having an awareness of this concept makes it easier for me to understand the different reactions. While you have time to work through your denial and part of your anger, your team members have not.
It's not over till its over. So keep some faith and don't make mistakes based on the insider information. In the end it might all work out and you want to leave that possibility open. You are not in an easy situation.
Stay busy and focused on your responsibilities as a professional. Can't hurt. Listen to the pod cast on the layoffs, MT gives great advice. And there is no time better than today to start working on your network skills and building relationships. The definition of LUCK is when opportunity meets preparation. If your information is correct you're about to get a whole bunch of opportunity, so your already ahead by working on your preparation. I wish you the best.
Stay professional
Even it if is a done deal, you must work hard to remain professional. Get over all the "stuff" and get back to doing your job and work at the same level you did prior to the news. Not only is it the correct thing to do as a professional but you are also being paid. It will also help for your reference from this employer and your reputation. Also, get networking, resume, Careers Tools.....
Again, good luck!
