My manager will be out of the office for 6-8 weeks for surgery and I will be upgraded to a manager while she is out. She has told me I do not have to do one-on-ones or have staff meetings (which I think is weird). In addition, I can tell she’s having a hard time letting go of the work and is afraid items will fall through the cracks. Should I send her a weekly status report, or is there anything else I can do to reassure her that everything will be okay? Any other suggestions?

I did this for my boss many years ago. We sat down and worked out the parameters of my responsibilities. I fulfilled them and was complimented when she returned. I encourage you to do the same.

I used the recommendations in this cast and looked like a rock star. If you haven't already listened, do so soon! http://www.manager-tools.com/2013/02/covering-your-boss-chapter-2-email

I met with my boss a few days before his planned leave and described my strategy for covering while he was gone, the recommendations in this cast, as well as the information I would make available to him upon his return (a report with all the most important and urgent items that had been completed, or still needed attention). Very successful experience and the feedback I recieved was that I did great.
