What do you say if you do not know an answer on an interview. I keep asking this question and keep getting told to say something. My new boss told me to say "I dont know" he said he has said, this is difficult to answer as you are not giving me enough information, too many variables. He said he was once giving this crazy look from the guy asking the question but someone said we will just move on to the next question.

Is there a right way to handle this? What is it?

In my opinion, there's nothing wrong with saying "I don't know". The interviewer is likely looking for a direct answer and BS'ing them or giving them the run around on a question is unprofessional and disrespectful.
Even better might be an "I don't know but here is an example of what I would d to figure it out" if you have some background but not enough to give a complete answer.
