I’ve had several reports over the last couple of years lose a parent. Aside from sending flowers, gifts, donations, etc. When is it appropriate or even expected to make an appearance at the viewing?

I’ve had several reports over the last couple of years lose a parent. Aside from sending flowers, gifts, donations, etc. When is it appropriate or even expected to make an appearance at the viewing?
Depends on the relationship
I attended my EA's husband's celebration of life, I attended a peer's sister's funeral about an hour's drive away, and for my main point of contact with a client, her funeral three hours' drive away (the owners were surprised to see me there, but we'd developed a relationship over about 4-6 years of interactions). I'd be more likely to attend and express condolences than send a gift, depending on who my direct, peer, or friend lost.
