I think I'd be honest. Something like, I had a couple of topics I wanted to discuss with you, but now doesn't seem like a great time. They can wait. Now, what can I do to help you with the problems you're having today?

That's basically what I did. I gave him an out which he declined leaving him obligated to hear me out. Fortunately his mood had mellowed a bit from earlier in the day plus he's a pretty amiable guy.
