Looking for thoughts and feedback here from those who have hired.

I'm returning to the work-force after a year out. I took a six-month self-funded sabbatical, which turned into early retirement at age 50. My wife has just committed to fostering a niece, which means I must return to work to cover the unexpected shortfall. (I plan to transition into managing software technical staff.)

Once I can talk about the situation without grousing :-) what would be the best way to address this time away?

How would you react to seeing each of these on a resume? Which would you prefer? Would your HR system have a different preference?

1. Most recent resume item shows "2015-07 to present : early retiree".

2. Most recent resume item shows "2015-07 to present : self-funded sabbatical".

3. Most recent resume item shows date-range ending with 2015-07, and I note the gap in an aside in my cover letter.

4. Most recent resume item shows date-range ending with 2015-07, and no mention of the gap appears in my cover letter.

(None of the choices would roll a relevant job on/off my one-pager.)

Thanks!
