Blast furnace like winds and searing temperatures above 117F (47C) has caused many bushfires mainly in the southern state of Victoria.

More than 108 people have lost their lives and over 700 homes have been destroyed. The ferocity and speed with which the fires moved meant many people were helpless to escape or save their home or lives.

For reference, the total land area burned is in excess of 350,000Ha (1300 sq mi) which approaches the land area of Rhode Island at 400,000Ha (1500 sq mi)

Please remember those affected in your thoughts and prayers. For more information or to donate to the relief appeals, visit http://www.abc.net.au/news/events/bushfires/

10/Feb/2009 Update: The bushfire death toll now sits at 173 and is expected to continue to rise. For the first time since Saturday, there are no "urgent threat" warnings on the fires still burning. This means that weather conditions have settled and current fires are not immediately in danger of affecting property or life.
