I was pleasantly surprised that, 7 weeks after I started O3s the MT way, my boss decided to start them as well, but on a monthly basis. Someone mentioned in a meeting that I was doing O3s and the boss didn't really seem to take notice but a few weeks later he was calling for O3s. Also his Boss called for skip-level meetings with each department. So, when it rains, it pours, I guess. From zero communication to tons of it in just a few weeks. The real challenge will be to see if everyone sticks to it and rolls out feedback. Otherwise it will just be chatting and wasting time, hoping none of the company's old bad blood boils to the surface.

My boss's first O3 with me would not win any MT awards - he was 20 minutes late for our 1 hour meeting, he plans to hold them only monthly, he took a phone call during the O3, and he asked how "the kid" (yes, my son, who has a name) was doing. But I'm glad this boss is doing something. The O3 was much more natural than the forced "Update" I had been trying to give him.

As for my own O3s, they have started to fizzle, with many people traveling and skipping one here and there. Several DRs are arriving late to their O3s as well. I guess it's time to roll out feedback and tell them the message it sends when they are late for our O3...not a good one!

Your boss may not be perfect, but no one is.   Sounds like your boss wants to be better...that's good.

Review how to be effective in your boss's O3:  http://www.manager-tools.com/2008/11/boss-one-on-ones-professional-updates and focus on the good things that are happening.

and yes, make sure yours are on time, well run, and focused on the direct.
