Would you take a temporary direct for three months?
My CEO agreed to provide me with a temporary direct until I can hire a permanent one in July. I would manage her and she woud supervise 10 staff. She is very talented and would help me, but only for 3 months. I'm not sure having a talented direct for 3 months is better than the waiting to hire a full time person in July.

How much time do you have to do both jobs?
Having a capable temp running the day-to-day stuff will allow you time to do your job - including finding a permanent manager. You would lose a lot of that time if you're running the search, doing your own job, and running the staff you're trying to find a manager for. I was in that same position for about 3 months last year, and I would have given anything to have the option available to bring in a temp so I could focus on the search.
It sounds like you know her and her capabilities already, so I imagine the learning curve would be pretty low. I would pre-wire the team, informing them that she will be managing them for a short time and that you expect them to work for her the way they would work for you.
I wish you all the best in your search.

Leave a lasting impression
Take the opportunity. Not only will you have someone to help you for these months, but you also have an opportunity to leave a lasting impression of your own qualities with someone that will be working in another department later. If you leave a good impression, she will be like an ambassador for you and your team.
