Personal branding became a thing at the end of the 1990s. It is the practice of applying branding - the marketing activity of describing and distinguishing a product - to people. For companies, it's the activity that means when you think of a certain grocery store, you know whether it's price or quality that's most important there. In theory, knowing that will drive you to choose one store over another. For people, it's about whether you get put on a certain project, or get a certain job.
