A phone screen is part of the hiring process which comes after the hiring manager has reviewed your resume, and before the interview. It's for the recruiter to narrow down the number of candidates to the number that will be interviewed. The purpose of a phone screen, from a recruiter's point of view is to get some basic details, check your resume is accurate, sometimes check your salary intentions, and finally, to find out if you have reasonable comprehension and communication skills in comparison to those required for the job. That said, though a phone screen is fairly basic, it is possible to shine.
