This is the first in a series of casts about negotiation. Marvin Gaye said: Negotiation means getting the best of your opponent. That's a common assumption. The the other party is trying to get the better of you (unfairly) and that you're trying to get the better of them (fairly, of course).

Going into any conversation adversarially, though is going to reduce the chances of a successful negotiation. Stephen Covey said: Think Win-Win. It's become trite since he wrote it in 1989, but that doesn't mean it's not still useful. So how do we reduce the adversity and increase the likelihood of a win-win? It's all about relationships.
