Our guidance on communicating with your boss around personal topics.

In our conferences we ask 'who here shares everything with their boss?'  No hands ever go up.  No sensible professional shares EVERYTHING with their boss.  Many of us think of our professional and personal lives as completely separate, and wouldn't dream of telling our boss about our children's problems at school or our medical problems.

There's good reason for keeping some things to yourself.  There are definitely things your boss doesn't need to know.  That said, when you want personal time or special dispensation from your boss, you might need to expand your definition of what your boss needs to know.
