When your directs want you to adjudicate a fight, start by asking, "Have you talked to them?"

One of the normal frustrations we managers face is when our directs disagree and want us to solve their problem. You're normal if you don't know how to solve those problems. You're not a counselor. And it's often an asymmetric battle. One side wants something the other doesn't, and vice versa.

And the solution is also asymmetric. Don't get involved.

  • How do I keep from being between my directs when they disagree?
  • How can I stop my directs from making me the referee when they argue or fight?
