This guidance describes what to say when you don't have an answer to a question, even when it's urgent.

We get lots of notes saying that folks felt lost until they found our guidance. One of the most commonly stated reasons is, "I didn't know what I was doing, and didn't want others to know I didn't know." Well, rest easy. You're in the vast majority. Almost nobody knows what they're doing. Everybody else is fearful too.

And just like you don't have to remember other's names - you just have to be willing to apologize - you don't have to have all the answers. If you do have all the answers, well, you're underpaid.

This Cast Answers These Questions

  • What do I say when I don't have a good answer to a direct's question?
  • How do I handle situations where I'm unsure?
  • What should I say when I'm backed into a corner on an issue?
