Performance Evaluations in a Matrix Environment (Part 1 of 2)
December 31st, 2006Whether you like Matrix Organizations or not (we don’t), the fact is, many of us manage within one. If you’ve done it for a while, you’ve probably adopted the Matrix Review Cynicism syndrome. What’s that, you say? Well, if you’ve ever thought about asking for performance review input from someone else, and then said, “NAAH - they’ll just blow me off,” then you’ve adopted it.
The fact is, in far too many places, even IF your company requires the dotted line manager to add input, either no input is forthcoming, or what you get is not very helpful. Oh, and PLEASE don’t tell us you wanted example of behavior with their reply.
In this cast, we talk about what to do when you have to give a review to one of your directs when you live in The Matrix.

I don’t think you really elaborated as to why you dislike matrix orgs. Perhaps you could post the cons. I’ve grown up in a matrix org and don’t know any other way. I definitely see some of the disadvantages. But, I see tremendous upside. I used to have all the network systems engineers at our location, up to 25. I could apply people, skill sets, experience across the different projects and readjust as needed. This is especially true when you have to surge for a short term deadline. I know everything can be covered in a “pure” org, but your intense dislike leaves me scratching my head.

Tom-
It’s hard enough to get people to have a robust relationship with their manager. And harder to get the manager to have a robust enough relationship to write a good review.
And now we’re going to give them a second boss?
