Recently I have been blessed to hear about various opportunities and have spoken with some hiring managers and recruiters.  I made it known I was looking for management roles yet the individual works to sell me on an IC role.

These individuals inform me that their companies (and several of them are very big companies) hire everyone as IC's and then if you perform in 6 months, they will give you a team.  One common denominator appears to be promises of significant growth of the team in the next year .  Several people at company X told me that everyone coming in takes a step down in position, and they are flatly organized.

Are other managers seeing this trend in the industry?

Does anyone have any success stories of how such a move worked out?  Or times it did not?

The promise of doubling a teams size in the next year in this economy rings a bit hollow to me.  Anyone care to share their thoughts?
