dual roles?
Hello Mark and Mike,
I am so happy that I found this resource. I have been such a slacker and have not kept up my resume.
After high school my father and I started a small manufacturing business. It was a niche market here in the US. Unfortunately, this market was crushed by the economic problems of late, and we were forced to close. There are no real job opportunities in the US now. Time for a career change.
As with most small businesses you wear many hats. My initial role was a technician. The process and equipment required special training from the good folks in Italy. This training allowed me to troubleshoot and repair the equipment without having to wait a month for a tech to arrive from Italy. Every few years we would implement new technologies when the industry would shift. I was the best candidate to keep receiving this training. The process was easily transferred to another technician, but the repairing of the equipment was not. As the company grew (up to 250 employees) I moved to management roles, but I retained the mission-critical duties of a technician at each new role.
1. What is the best way to present this on a resume? Would you list concurrent roles? I thought of the following too.
Nov 05- Nov 09: Manager, Company- "role duties"
-retained mission-critical duties of technician.
- achievement
Nov 96-Oct 98: Technician, Company- "role duties"
- "mission critical duties"
-achievement.
2. Some internet sources say that some hiring managers tend to look down on family members of a business. I am in no way ashamed of what we accomplished for so long, but I do not want to be discarded immediately. Is it something for the resume, cover letter, or interview?
Tks,
SJ
