I wish I had known this 30 years ago when I immigrated to the US
Folks,
I wish I had this information over 30 years ago when I immigrated to the US. (Folks, I'm kind of revealing me age here. )
Little did I know about the extreme power of my immediate bosses. I didn't know, for example, that I could expect of them at most 50% of the time to help me in some way, but the other 50% or more they would definitely hurt me. And when they want to hurt, they will go for the Jugular! And they go for the immediate divorce, not for any reconciliation whatsoever.
The work structure and mentality in the US are pretty much based on the Military way of doing things when it comes to bosses. Forget all the stuff you read and hear about participative management, team environment, etc. Most American bosses are not well-traveled and culturally savvy, and many of them suffer from borderline personality disorders. As long as there is no law or regulation against doing something, they would not feel bound by any internal moral and ethical considerations.
I know some of you may feel I'm getting too harsh on true American Management Style, but the reality is what it is. Bottom line: your boss can ruin yours and your family's lives with a stroke of a pen. And the least you can do to protect yourself and your family, is to listen to and learn from M&M podcasts on this issue, please, please. They are absolutely spot on and career-life saving.
