Sometimes managers don't want to do One On Ones. One of the reasons they give is,"I'm a creative person." Or, "I don't like step-by-step solutions." These reasons are weak, and you can overcome them easily.
There are a lot of misconceptions about managing. One of the most pernicious is that managing others is a completely individual endeavor; that each manager gets to manage his or her own way. But that's ludicrous, and wrong, and ineffective. Creative people may want to manage "their own way": don't let them take that too far.
