This guidance describes the first meeting a manager ought to have with a new team member.
Too many of us don't do a great job of focusing on hiring the right people…and then we compound the error by being too busy to get them off to a good start.
But this is Manager Tools, and there's a right way. As we like to say, here's how.

Thanks
That speech you propose for the new starters was a thing of beauty. I'd love to have been spoken to like that when I started a new gig!
Another reason I'm proud to be one of your podcastaways.
Thanks
Mark
Agreed! Great Speech for First Day!
I fully agreed with Mark: "The speech is a thing of beauty". Thanks. Everything I believe at and the principles which the company I work for is based at are in that speech, not more, not less. ¡Sounds perfect to say that out load in the first day! Definitely can save a lot of hassle when some start focusing more on results while others on people wellbeing and then there is unnecessary disagreement.
This cast struck a chord, thank you
Theee months ago, I was hired as a manager, do you think I could have this type of meeting with my Directs now that I know I should do it with new hires? Even though my Directs aren't new to the company they are new to me, and really, it's the same thing right? I know what I expect from them, they should know as well, would it be as effective if I address them as a team, or do you feel a one on one situation is better?
Hmm. Good question!
Madge,
I am in a similar situation. Having never covered these topics with existing team members, some with tenure longer than my own. I plan to speak to each topic over a series of upcoming O3 meeting, during my 10 minutes.
I am eager to additional suggestions from the M-T community.
Thank you,
Dave
