How To Create A Simple Behavioral Interview Question

This cast describes how to create a simple behavioral interview question.

We believe that behavioral interviewing is the best systemic form of interviewing evaluation a manager can use. There's nothing that even comes CLOSE. Sure, there are those who think testing is important, and we don't disagree. But we also think that a professional manager can, with time and an effective interview process, approximate what amounts to a "test" of any candidate that 'is reasonably certain to be an accurate predictor of future success'. Those quote marks indicate that that is a claim that a popular screening test makes.

The question, of course, is: HOW?

There are two ways. One is to use the Manager Tools Interview Creation Tool, which we're due to roll out shortly for premium members. Answering about a hundred questions on a scale of 1-5, in about 45 minutes, and you get an interview printed out immediately afterwards that is so good some managers will cry about it.

The other way is to use this simple model described in this cast. It works, and it's free.

The timing on this is outstanding! I am in the process of hiring an Admin Assistant. I've listened (again) to the podcasts on hiring as well as a few in the interviewing series. This one came along just when I needed it.

I too am anxious for the Interview Creation Tool, but in the meantime, I'm using the guidance from this podcast. I see how enlightening the answers can be in helping to choose the right candidate.

Thrilled to bits, and perfect timing. I am about to hire 13 new people in the next three weeks, and the next thing on my to to list was "review interview questions & revise if needed." I've been conducting behavioural interviews for years, and I still got LOTS of extra value packed into this short podcast. You guys are simply the best.

We are in the process of hiring three new persons and this podcast and the one about "how to prepare an interview" (and of course "set the bar high") were of great help.

Thank you so much for that.

I translated and sent to the managers who were in the recuitment process a translation of your PDF and asked them to take 2 hours to prepare their questions. We then reviewed what they came up with for half an hour. And then had our interviews.
They were at first a little bit surprised to be asked to spend 2 hours on that.

Those 2 hours were in fact the best investment we could do. And they now agree on that!

- it forced them to be very accurate in what they were expecting from the candidates

- by creating 10 behavioral questions, we came up with what is the core of our "culture" (how we specifically work in our company and what it means in the day to day life).

- the interviews were professional, there were no dead time and we got a very detailed pile of informations from the candidates (they reported to the recruiter that they never had had such a professional behavior from the company they saw in their search)

- we could easily compare the candidates on the basis of their answer to the SAME questions

- at the end of each interview, our opinion about the candidate was about the same and it was really easy to say "yes/no" with real arguments (not "well I can't tell why, but I think he is okay" - grrrr!)

This is the best tool I have used for interviewing. Thats an incredible value added I got from you guys.

Hello Mike and Mark,

I'm a super huge fan of your site and appreciate your wisdom on management.

Like many of the posts before me, I'm actively seeking the Interview Creation Tool.  In the podcast it says it is available for Premium Content Members.  I've searched, but am not finding.  Can you post the link on this Podcast, so we can utilize this tool?

If the tool has not been created, it might be helpful if you could post something on the "How To Create A Simple Behavioral Interview Question"  Podcast page, letting everyone know it does not exist or an ETA, to save others the time and hassle of looking.

Hi Guys

Thanks so much for you podcasts, they have truly helped me in my business development.

I can't seem to find the interview questions creation tool that you mention in the podcast. Is this linked somewhere else? I have googled and searched your site and can't find it.

Could you tell us where we can find it, or at least tell us that it isn't up, so people don't spend time searching for it?
