Performance Reviews – Part 2

This week, we continue with our discussion on effective performance reviews. Last week, we discussed collecting data; today we discuss evaluating the data and writing the review. In the weeks following, we'll continue with a discussion on actually DELIVERING the review.

Hi Guys, Just noticed your latest

Hi Guys,

Just noticed your latest episode in my "Juice." (You'd think they could have come up with a better name when they were forced to stop using "iPodder Lemon!") The timing for your podcasts on performance reviews is perfect. I'm sure it's no coincidence that you discuss the topic now--this being the time of year when managers are thinking about such things.

Just wanted to let you know that your podcast and Kevin Williams' are #1 and #2 on my short list of "must subscribe" podcasts. I have browsed the links listed in your "Other Sites" list. Do you have any suggestions for podcasts that one might add to one's list of resources?

Mike and Mark, You guys are terrific,

Mike and Mark,
You guys are terrific, keep up the great work. I have a few questions or comments but will get to those another time. I would like to know if you have a sample form that you hand out for the performance reviews? I sounded like it was supposed to be attached to the review memo that you posted that preps everyone about reviews, but I didn't see it.
Also, I am new to managing and am in a business office that has me and another manager over 18 sales people. We meet everyday on an as needed basis to discuss current sales, problems, solutions, etc. Without knowing a lot of info do you think we could still benefit from One on One's? We also have another 8-10 office people that we meet with on a less frequent bases but still come to us if they are having problems with the sale people, or customers.
Sorry to ramble, and keep up the fantastic work. Even though managing can be "unsexy", I definately look forward to hearing from you each week.

Steve

Like the Swallows of San Juan Capistrano...

...I perform my annual migration to these Performance Review podcasts. They worked last year. The only difference this year? I have a year's worth of O3 data to support my evaluations. Awesome stuff, guys!

Thanks for transforming drudgery into the merely routine.

Performance Reviews

Mike and Mark,

Just wanted to thank you for the podcast and share of the success.

I took your advice and made up a multipronged folder for each direct report - the folder included a summary sheet that had the core message, goals for next year, things I can do to contribute to their success, and a professional development plan.  On the next tab was the evaluation itself and their self evaluation.  Next was their job description, then examples of their work, and supplementary questionaire of some Drucker questions I asked them to respond to.  Last was a summary of their leave time.  I think people appreciated the effort I put into giving them this feedback.

thx!

They did...

...appreciate your effort.  It's sad that what we recommend is really just basic professionalism, and yet folks are stunned to receive it.

We're THRILLED for your directs that you took the time.  WELL DONE!
