First Job Fundamentals - Asking Questions

You can never ask too many questions, as long as you're listening and implementing the answers. It gets irritating for a manager to be asked the same question over and over again. If you ask different questions of different people and are clearly trying to put things together, you can ask as many questions as you want.

Some questions have straightforward answers. For example, where do we keep the architect's drawings and how do we organize them?

Other questions don't have such straightforward answers. Why do we use this software rather than another? Why do we ask our customers to complete this form? The answer may not make sense to you. It might be a product of history, or some manager's preference, or just because. Don't argue. For now, just accept it.

Some questions don't have answers at all. These are great questions! What if we did the drilling before the sanding? Could we try organizing these by time and see if that gives us any insight? Those questions often lead to something new and better.

You can't tell what kind of question you're asking usually. Just ask, get the answer and think about it for a bit. That's how you'll learn.

We'll be back next week with more practical guidance. If you can't wait, you can find all the follow-up emails here.
