Welcome to First Job Fundamentals!

We designed this series to give you a primer on the things you need to know when you start your professional career. It's far from everything we know about being an effective professional however.

Over the next 12 weeks, we're going to send you even more information you need to be effective at work and to start your career off well.

One thing nobody told us when we started our careers is that a new job is exhausting. Every time. Even when you move from VP to EVP, the change is tiring and it takes weeks to feel rested and months to feel like you have a clue what's going on. Your brain is working overtime to absorb all the new stuff, and you have to get used a commute, being at work every day at the same time, and minding your manners all day long. It's not surprising it's tiring.

Don't expect to be able to go out every night in the first few weeks of a new job. There's no sleeping in or missing lectures to make up for lack of sleep that you may have been able to get away with at school.

Nor should you expect to 'get it' instantly. A new job is just that: 'new'. You have tons to learn, and you won't get everything right instantly. That's ok. It's still ok to learn when you're in a job - that doesn't stop when you leave school.

We'll be back next week with more practical guidance. If you can't wait, you can find all the follow-up emails here.
