Our guidance on welcoming a new colleague - what to do in the first week?

When someone new joins your team, you're probably already busy. That role has been vacant, and what you really need is for the new person to hit the ground running, and start taking some stuff off your hands. You don't have time to train them, answer all their questions and do their work and yours.

Whilst this is all true, acting on that truth is shortsighted. Another couple of weeks as if that person were not present won't hurt, and going slowly, taking the time to get to know them, and developing a personal relationship with them will ensure they're around for the long haul.
