How To Get Training Budget - Part 1
This cast describes how you can approach your manager in order to get training budget.
It can be incredibly frustrating to be an individual contributor and KNOW you could do more if only you had the training. Or perhaps you're someone who works really hard, your career is very important to you, and you'd like to be rewarded with training budget the company says it doesn't have. Or you see people in other teams going on 'jollys' and no matter how many times you ask, you never get to go. Or you REALLY want to go to a Manager Tools conference and your manager will just not agree ☹
This is one of those casts where we can tell you the best way to approach the situation, but we can't guarantee the outcome. BUT, approaching the situation in the best way will raise your esteem in your manager's eyes and will increase your chances of getting budget in the future.

Thanks for the effort
Mark (and Mike - in absentia),
Thanks for the effort of putting out the casts this week, even though it wasn't the conversational format that we're all used to. The quality of the content was top notch, nonetheless. Listening to the podcasts is something I look forward to on a weekly basis and I'm glad I didn't have to miss them this week.
I am in an organization currently facing a downtown and making sure training dollars are used wisely and effectively can be challenging. I recognize the value of training and want to make sure those opportunities aren't completely eliminated. This cast has given me some very useful ideas for how to make sure training requests are justified and help meet the needs of the organization. One of the first practices I may institute is having anyone who might be considering a request for training over a certain amount listen to this cast, and the one to follow, as a prerequisite.
Thanks again,
Mike
Comparables to ECC?
BLUF: What are some communications-based conferences that are comparable to the Manager Tools Effective Communications Conference?
Background: Fully realizing that this cast wasn't intended to sell MT conferences, I'm going to use it for that purpose anyway! I'm asking my boss for training budget soon to attend the DC Effective Communications Conference and am using the SOCCR format to make the proposal. Has anyone else done this and, if so, are there some examples of similar communications-based conferences and trainings that I can use as comparisons?
Thanks for suggestions!

Mark and Mike,
I am a regular listener and user of your podcasts, which have helped me to improve a lot in my work. I am not a manager, but I listen to the career and the manager tools podcasts from a direct's perspective and find it very useful.
I work for a big international organization in the sector of development aid, so I don't really fall into your target audience, but I try to put your advice in my working context, and it works very well for me.
I also want to tell you that I have used this podcast and the soccer format to ask for training budget and... I actually got (a part of) it!
So thank you very much, and keep up with your great work!
